Berlin, May 2026 - The BIM Champion 2026 in the category 'From Planning to Sustainable Operation' goes to the project team around Ucaneo, B.I.G. Holding SE, Vollack Group, and NEVARIS Construction Software. The contribution 'Construction Costs and Eco Goals in Harmony with Target Value Design in the Ucaneo and B.I.G. Project in Berlin' was awarded.

The BIM Champions competition is one of the most prestigious awards for digital innovations in the construction and real estate industry in German-speaking countries.

Initiated by buildingSMART Germany, outstanding projects and innovations in digital construction (BIM) are awarded annually. Innovative applications across the entire value chain are recognized, with a focus on open standards (Open BIM). 

Target Value Design Approach

The jury particularly praised the consistently integrated BIM approach, in which economic and ecological objectives are not played off against each other but are managed together. Central to this is the methodology of Target Value Design – originally mainly known from the automotive industry – which was applied in this Berlin project for the first time with this level of consistency to sustainable construction and real estate processes.

The data-based management of cost and sustainability goals using Target Value Design is named by the jury as the most innovative and, from an ecological perspective, the most convincing approach of the competition.

Staying within construction budgets, meeting funding requirements, and achieving ambitious climate goals at the same time—for many public and private developers, this was long considered an almost insurmountable conflict of objectives. The award-winning project demonstrates that this contradiction can be resolved through a data-driven and integrated approach.

A key advantage of the integrated approach lies in the simplification of processes. Instead of disparate standalone solutions for AVA, cost estimation, and sustainability assessment, a shared database is created for economic and ecological decisions.

“Our solution actually makes the process simpler,” Ines Mansfeld continues. Sustainability metrics are recorded exactly where they arise—directly in the cost estimation and construction process.

The new eco-tool adds an additional dimension to traditional cost estimation: the carbon footprint. This allows different materials, construction methods, or designs to be compared quickly and reliably within a single system.
