A digital twin basically is the digital replica of a physical object. And, more importantly, this virtual replica is continuously fed with real-time information from the physical object, reflecting its current state. Many industries are seeing significant benefits from the adoption of digital twins. In manufacturing, digital twins for example support the virtual prototyping and remote product diagnosis and optimize the production processes. In healthcare, simulations for complex operation rehearsals can be run, as well as non-intrusive predictive diagnostics. In aerospace digital twins can increase safety through predictive analysis\u2019 and the optimization of design and engineering. And in the energy sector, power grids can be replicated using digital twins and the remote operation of offshore facilities can be enabled. Also, the logistics, agriculture, and retail industries already benefit from leveraging digital twins. <\/p><p><strong>So what\u2019s in it for the construction industry? <\/strong><\/p><p>Our industry needs a digital transformation, that\u2019s for sure. The goal must be to create more efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly buildings that can adapt to changing needs and environments. This will help improve productivity, reduce waste, and enhance collaboration between different teams and departments. Through real-time monitoring of physical assets, predictive maintenance can be undertaken, and the risk of errors is reduced. Furthermore, the data accumulated from digital twins can be used for better, i.e., data driven decision making to improve building efficiency. <\/p><p>But why is there such a delay in the AEC\/O industry around digital twin adoption? The most obvious answer is the siloed nature of construction project information, as the maturity and connectivity of AEC\/O data sources is still developing. Construction and building management companies also have to deal with unpredictable variables that are difficult to optimize: the uniqueness of each construction project and the preferences of the building occupants. Furthermore, as the value proposition of digital twins in the AEC\/O industry has been less obvious until recently, businesses leaders have been reluctant to invest the time and capital required to adopt them.<\/p><p>Yet as real-time connectivity and automation tools have become more accessible, digital twins have moved from static representations to \u201csmart\u201d replicas. A static twin \u2013 such as a BIM model \u2013 already acts as a central data repository, offering an easily accessible, centralized source of data about a building\u2019s assets. This improves productivity by providing the necessary backbone for removing data siloes and integrating assets with various systems. When that twin is enhanced with real-time connectivity \u2013 a smart twin \u2013 the result is a comprehensive building management system that enables increased responsiveness to issues and enhanced data analytics capabilities. Maintenance activities are expedited and building management is easier to forecast and optimize. <\/p><p>The ultimate goal is to develop an \"autonomous twin\" through the adoption of technological advancements. The concept of an autonomous twin would enable the creation of fully bi-directional systems that allow buildings to automatically control and adjust the function of various elements, such as environmental controls, elevator movements, and access to specific areas. While this outcome is a longer-term goal, it is a viable possibility. In the meantime, business leaders can optimize the value generated by individual digital twin solutions by integrating them into a comprehensive process known as Building Lifecycle Intelligence (BLI). BLI refers to the accumulation of data across the entire construction lifecycle, which is then converted into a single, reliable source of information. <\/p><p>This approach enables all parties involved in a project to have immediate access to the information they require, regardless of the project's current stage in the overall lifecycle. Not only does the BLI methodology optimize processes in the short term, but it also provides several long-term benefits. The survey found that 56% of respondents said it had become more important to them that their employer works actively with the environment and sustainability. The biggest shift in attitude was seen among young women, indicating that sustainability is becoming a priority for a younger audience.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><div>\n<p><strong>With its front-runner position and credibility on climate and environmental issues<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> <strong>Sweden tends to highlight sustainability trends before they gain momentum elsewhere. This survey shows how attitudes towards sustainability are changing rapidly; the trend is expected to become even more prominent in the coming years and will have important consequences for how businesses operate and run their corporate real estate and workplaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople\u2019s attitudes drive change, so it is gratifying that more and more people want to work for companies that prioritize their environmental work. Employers have everything to gain by taking the lead in sustainable and energy-efficient workplaces \u2013 both to reduce their climate impact and costs, but also to strengthen their employer brand,\u201d says Thomas Marx, IoT Expert at Spacewell.<\/p>\n<h2>Biggest change among young women<\/h2>\n<p>56 percent of Swedes state that it has become more important that their employer works actively with the environment and sustainability over the past five years. The biggest change in attitude has occurred among women aged 18-29, where 64% state that sustainability at work has become more important. This is according to a SIFO survey conducted on behalf of Spacewell, a company that uses digital solutions to create smart and energy-efficient workplaces for companies such as Accenture, AXA, \u00d8rsted, Deloitte, and PostNord.<\/p>\n<h2>Green transition<\/h2>\n<p>Buildings account for about 40 percent of Sweden\u2019s energy use and more than a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions from a lifecycle perspective. Now that the EU is tightening legislation on corporate sustainability, for example, through the new <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.ec.europa.eu\/capital-markets-union-and-financial-markets\/company-reporting-and-auditing\/company-reporting\/corporate-sustainability-reporting_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSRD reporting directive<\/a>, companies are required to analyze their value chains and show how they contribute to a green transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart and energy-efficient workplaces are no longer a yes-or-no question \u2013 it is a question of now or next year.
