A huge cube thrown onto the beach
MuCEM, the city’s most spectacular museum, is dedicated to Mediterranean civilizations at their most pivotal stages. It is located at the far end of the old port, former port pier J4. The east and south sides of the completely glazed building are screened by a filigree structure which is reminiscent of elegant lace netting and made of a new and particularly pressure-resistant concrete. With an area of some 30,000 m2, it is one of the 50 most visited museums in the world. The cube-like building makes use of two long, narrow gangways to connect an ancient fort, a quarter of the city crisscrossed with alleyways atop a hill and, last of all, a walkway which extends right around the museum building itself.
