Unconventional Architecture and Homage to Elvis
World Architecture News gave the Cambridge House its "House of the Month" award in January 2008, calling it an "extraordinary space wrapped in sustainable materials like pre-patinated copper and red cedar that weather with grace." Robert Augustine suceeded in putting his sustainable design strategies for the house into practice. By running animated sun studies he was able to decisively optimize the house's solar efficiency. While high-efficiency glass windows capture the sun's energy, two-sided (dark/light) roller shades reflect solar glare and mitigate overheating. The unconventional design includes a sod covered roof deck, a terrace paved with fieldstone and what is known as the "Jungle Room", a room that is clad completely in weathered green copper – an homage to the recreation room in Elvis Presley's villa Graceland.
