Building for the Future

Nemetschek is a member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB) [German Sustainable Building Council]. The task of the DGNB, founded 2007, is to find and promote solutions that enable sustainable design, construction and management. It is the central organization in Germany for the exchange of knowledge, for training and public awareness in this future-oriented sector of the building and real estate industry.

The DGNB’s work focuses on the development and awarding of the German Sustainable Building Certification. The DGNB developed the most recent certificate together with the German Ministry for Traffic, Building and Urban Affairs (BMVBS).

In contrast to the other certification programs under the umbrella of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), the German Certificate takes account of all aspects of sustainability, namely ecological, economic and socio-cultural criteria. The applied technology, adherence to the relevant EU standards, quality of the processes and the characteristics of the particular building location are also taken into consideration in the evaluation. There are individual grades for the different areas, and the overall rating of the building is expressed as a total grade – and in the categorizations Gold, Silver and Bronze. The German Sustainable Building Certification was awarded for the first time to 16 buildings in January 2009.

Members of the DGNB include renowned architects, engineers and scientists, as well as companies from the building industry. In working groups, they draw up the measurement criteria for evaluating energy efficiency and the functional quality of buildings, for example.
